Derived from Middle English taillour meaning "cutter of cloth". Originally this was a surname which denoted someone who was a tailor.

Mercer Co, WV, was formed as a VA county, in 1837 from portions of Giles and Tazewell Counties. It was named in honor of General Hugh Mercer of Fredericksburg, who died at the Battle of Princeon, NJ, during the Revolutionary War. The county seat is Princeton. It's the second VA county to be named after General Mercer, the first was formed in 1785, and was in that part of VA that became the state of Kentucky

The Taylors came into WV as a clan with Millers and settled in Duhring WV 1840-1850, they were farmers. They had their own school and cemetery on top of Duhring mountain, Taylor school and Taylor cemetery .

This was a one room school house that was still being used until still standing on top of the mountain in recent years. More info on the school to follow.

This area in the 1840s were growing and opening coal mining and most of the Hazelwood and Taylor family lines I have were all coal miners .. Bluefield, Montcalm, Goodwill and Bramwell and surrounding areas in the 1840s growth for the WV area was coal jobs.

    --- Schillings Cemetery --In downtown Montcalm, turn left toward McComas, cross the bridge then turn right on Browning Lambert Mountain Road. Go three and a half miles , and turn left on a gravel road. Go another half mile, and the cemetery is beside the road on the right. The cemetery is clean and groomed. There's 77 graves with tombstones, and 57 unknown graves.
    --- TIM: Mammy as best I know of always lived on Belcher Mountain when she married, not sure how she married a son, then his father. And to have all those children. I know Andy Taylor and his sister Pearlie lived on the mountain also and stayed in the old home after Mammy passed and the other children had moved/married or passed. Grandpa (Allen) and Grandma (Valmer) built a cabin on the mountain also when they were married.
    -Mom recalls Clebe was quite a drinker and also good looking, I guess he was her favorite Uncle. She would always be doing things to help him, if I recall he passed away on the mountain also. He was sorta tall I think, had green eyes, dark hair, sorta a Clark Gable looking man. Pop (Eunice) as mom calls her, from what mom says was very pretty, she married a Hartwell. Eunice is buried at Schillings cemetery. For a while there were no headstones for the Taylors at Schillings, but a while back my brother came into a little money and he and my mom had headstones put on all the graves. My aunt Bunt (Ada Taylor Gordon) has a son buried there as well, his name was William Gordon Jr, but Gordon is mispelled on headstone, it is spelled Gorden. My mothers brother Dallas who was about 8 I think died on Christmas day at Bluefield Hostpital of Scarlet fever.
    -my great grandmother Esther Beulah Scott Hedrick is buried in CA. She moved there when her son got out of the service and bought her a place in Pacoima CA. .
    - A little side story, Dollie and John Gilbert lived out where Peg Brooks lived, John either left or died, then Dollie died quite young, in her 40's I think. They had children, the oldest was Virgie who married my dad's brother, she was 17 at the time I think, she helped raise the rest of the family, she is in the hospital now in Logan. Anyway, grandpa Allen, would always take them groceries when he could to help them out. Grandpa was a very generous and good man, seems he was always helping others who needed help.

          TIM: I remember walking up that road from Crystal many times, up over the mountain, it was beautiful up there. We would also walk down what was called the pint to get to Thornhill. Mom said they could walk to McComas, Browning Lambert Mtn and Matoaka without coming back down to Crystal. She worked when younger at a store in Thornhill, a little country store.
          - We visited who we called Aunt Oamie (Noami Gilbert Belcher), her sister Virgie Gilbert White was married to my dad's brother Thomas (Tommy) Jefferson White Jr.,
          - The Gilberts also lived on Belcher Mountain, their parents were John and Dollie Gilbert. I do know that my great grandmother W.Catherine Taylor married two William Taylors, first the son, then the father. W.Catherine Hodge Taylor, my mom said the W is the name Wealthy Catherine Hodge Taylor.

        --- TIM: Arley (we called Bill) also died on the mountain, he had went to visit his mother (Valmer) on a Sunday, she was at church in Thornhill, he layed down on the living room floor said he was tired from the walk from Crystal. My uncle Buddy (Alvis) went to get some water from bucket in kitchen, when he returned Bill was having a heart attack. Elaine ran down the pint to Thornhill to get help, But it was too late. Bill was 38 I think, is buried in Bluewell/Princeton, cemetery is near Pop Cravens funeral home. His wife is remarried - but still keeps in touch with mom and all of us.

Turn left on Buttermilk Junction Road, 11/6, and follow the gravel road up the hill. Turn right on Rubincan Road, 913, and park beside a house at the end of the road. The cemetery is about a half mile up the dirt road from the house.

      OBIT: Bluefield Daily Telegraph----BLUEFIELD - Roscoe Luther Taylor, 77, of 351 Pinnacle View Rd., (Bluewell), P.O. Box 3081, Bluefield, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 at his residence. Born Aug. 28, 1924 in Montcalm, he was a son of the late Oliver Jesse Taylor and Martha Scott Taylor. Mr. Taylor had been a resident of Bluewell for six years, was retired from the U.S. Steel Plant in Lorain, Ohio where he worked for 22 years and he worked for 10 years at American Coal Company at Crane Creek. He was the former owner and operator of his own Furnace Repair Company and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Coaldale. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II and was a member of the VFW. He entered the Army on April 17, 1943 and served until Dec. 15, 1945 where he served as cannonear under Gen. George Patton serving in the Eastern Theater of Operations. He saw action in the battles of Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 18, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, American Theater Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. From Great Britain he received the 'British Gall' Award and from the French government the 'Croix-de-Guerre'. Recently he was the recipient of the commemorative 'Gratitude Medal' from the Belgian government and the commemorative 'French Jubilee of Liberty Medal' honoring Operation Overlord from the French government. He was a member of the American Order of the French Croix-de-Guerre and was member of the Loyal Order of Moose. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Edna Sprinkle and Nora Walker; and brothers, Lewis Taylor and Edward Taylor. Survivors include sisters, Lucille Bryant Riddle of Rt. 5, Bluefield, Kathleen Poff and husband, Wilson of Bramwell, Opal Case and husband, Gale of Bland, Va., and Janice Tolbert of Port Neches, Texas; brothers, Harold Taylor and wife, Marie of New Castle, Del.; Nelson Taylor and wife, Alice of New Castle, and Bobby Perkins and wife, Eva of Rt. 20, Bluefield; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with the Rev. Roger Lacy officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Bluewell. Pallbearers will be nephews and honorary pallbearers will be Frank Beavers, Robert Shrewsbury and Leonard Scott.     -OBIT:Clara E. Taylor 1915-2000 Clara Ethel Taylor, 84, of Berkeley Springs (formerly of Duhring) died Saturday, February 19, 2000 at home. Born August 3, 1915 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late James Edward Kade and Hallie Thompson Kade Hedrick. She was a member of the Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs. She was a former member of the Church of Christ in Duhring. Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Pugh of Berkeley Springs; one grandson, Kevin Pugh of Damascus, MD; one granddaughter, Kimberly McCullagh of Damascus; three great-grandsons; one brother, John Kade of Bluefield; two sisters, Eva Riggs and Mary Jones, both of Bluefield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Edgar Taylor; two sons, George Edgar Taylor, Jr. and James Edward (Eddie) Taylor; four brothers, Ernest, Miles, Dewey and Carl Kade; and one sister, Hazel Miller. Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 22 at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with the minister Tony Reed officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluewell.       --Lovetta attended Montcalm Elementary School until the third grade when her parents moved to Bluefield, WV. She graduated Bluefield High School and then went to Bluefield State College. While at Bluefield State, earned her BS in English and a BS in Criminal Justice. Master's Degree in Language Arts at West Virginia University's College of Graduate Studies. She was once a real estate agent in WV and VA.
      Lovetta met her husband, Butch when she was hired by his father to work at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.

    ILah and Nilah are twins. ILah is a mongoloid. Attended school at__ and graduated. This was the first retarded school started in the state of Virginia. ILah is high functioning and is a miracle to be alive at her age today . She can tell time without a clock, enjoys watching her soap operas. When she ws younger and granny still ran a boarding house, ILah had her chores ie: setting the table for meals, and clearing the table. Folding napkins at every table and setting silverware in the right spots. ILah allowed very few people to interfer with her routine. I remember as a child drawing with her after meals. She would take our her writing pads, and practice her writing; page after page of her name or words. . She enjoys going for ride in the car, setting on the front porch and being with people. ILah is still alive and limited in doing simple things. Requires oxygen full time for her heart and has problems with her vision. She has worn a wig most of her life , or a scarf. She has china doll hands and feet and is an absolute joy to be around. Her memory recall over the years has been amazing and she knows people , even if years go by and they dont see her often.
